Thirsk - The Home of James Herriot

Thirsk is placed perfectly for discovering the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors where the rolling hills run into spectacular limestone valleys. Historic castles, ancient abbeys in extraordinary countryside whisper secrets about times gone by.

The birthplace of Thomas Lord, founder of Lord’s Cricket Ground and spiritual home of author James Herriot, Thirsk is a legendary North Yorkshire market town. The award winning World of James Herriot attracts people from around the world to see the visitor centre where the work and life of Alf Wight (James Herriot) is told from his books, film and BBC TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ is told in an interesting and graphic experience.

As a base for exploring the area, Thirsk is well placed in the Vale of York and is the starting point to discover ‘Herriot Country’.
