The Saddle Room

James Herriot liked a good meal out and would have been at home at The Saddle Room for its menus that include locally-sourced ingredients, many of which come from within 10 miles and many of the farms and small holdings that he visited on his rounds.

Winner of the Flavours of Herriot Award for Local Restaurant of the Year, and Best Family Dining Restaurant, the Saddle Room has also been awarded 5 stars by the AA and features a fabulous wine cellar and bar area. It has all been created from former race horse stables and includes a main restaurant and several fabulous dining areas suitable for all kinds of occasions. Situated next to The Forbidden Corner which is a very large tourist attraction in the Yorkshire Dales, the Saddle Room is perfectly placed for dining and entertaining before or after a visit to the attraction.

Wines at the Saddle Room are great value for money and have been personally selected by owner Leo Morris who spent many years in the wine trade. Leo has constructed an interesting and quirky range of wine styles to cover all tastes. An innovative wine preservation system called Verre Du Vin allows the fabulous premium wines to be offered by the glass rather than just by the bottle giving guests opportunities to try more options with different dishes.

AA five star rated bed and breakfast accommodation is situated within the grounds of Tupgill Park next to the Forbidden Corner with one twin and eight double ensuite units.  There are also six cottages on the Tupgill Estate which is in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales with 513 acres of glorious Yorkshire countryside.

The Saddle Room is also ideal for conferences, team building events and social occasions with facilities available for up to 200 in a marquee on the estate, 96 in the Saddle Room, 60 people in the Bell Barn, 50 in the Hayloft and 20 in the wine cellar.

Campbells of Leyburn

Campbells of Leyburn is a country store that is the envy of national supermarket chains for both choice and value and has been serving its local community and visitors to Herriot Country since 1868 when it began as R Campbell and Son in the same location as today.

Its wide range includes many local foods, national and international food brands, local meat in the butchery section, regional artisan products and an international wines selection.

Set in the beautiful rural town of Leyburn, Campbells is a long-established family business that has a loyal and tightly knit team that takes pride and understanding of all of the products on sale and who are ever ready to help customers with their choices.

An innovative business, Campbells of Leyburn seeks out new suppliers to continually improve the range of products available to customers plus improvements such as aisle-widening to reduce trolley congestion and always looking for ways to create a better stress-free shopping environment.

Campbells also provides for special occasions with gift packs, hampers and memorable gifts plus gift vouchers which can select the contents for yourself and can include special wines, smoked salmon, artisan cheeses, luxury chocolates or rare breed’s meat.

Campbells even has its own tourist guide which you can download from its website and is just a few minutes walk from the start of “The Shawl’ in Leyburn, a renowned walk with stunning views and romantic (if mythical) links to tragic Mary Queen of Scots. Leyburn is a perfect place from which to explore Wensleydale and attracts cyclists, campers, walkers and is perfect for anyone who appreciates a beautiful combination of the Yorkshire Dales’ rugged landscape, waterfalls, rivers and with idyllic walks and historic visitor attractions.,

Alf Wight (James Herriot) would probably have visited Campbells on his many visits to Leyburn and it’s well worth a trip on your visit to Herriot Country.

The Wensleydale Experience

The Wensleydale Experience is a farm experience with accommodation in luxury Yurts and a  Temple Folly. There’s also Fairhurst’s at Berry’s Café and Farm Shop where local ingredients and produce make the cut for low food miles, taste and quality, plus, The Healing Collective where relaxing Indian Head Massage or Reiki and Sound Healing with Gill McGready add to the relaxation options that this close to nature experience provides and that James Herriot could only dream of when he was treating the animals on the farms in this part of Herriot Country.

It is a clever farm diversification in the heart of Wensleydale, close to Bolton Castle, famous for imprisoning Mary Queen of Scots in 1568 - which dazzles in lights at night,

Aysgarth Falls and the villages of Aysgarth and West Witton with Askrigg, Hawes and Leyburn within a brief drive and there are many All Creatures Great and Small film locations in the area.

Herriot Country has many country self-catering options but few have an 18th Century Grade II listed folly that is also a compact accommodation unit with two bedrooms with balcony. The Temple is a grand structure with fabulous views of Wensleydale.

Views and nature are two absolutes at The Wensleydale Experience and guests staying in the luxurious Yurts onsite get both in copious amounts as they enjoy the natural environment with mod-cons. Each yurt is fully equipped with comfy beds, private hot tub, shower, loo and BBQ. Imagine showering and watching the sunset or seeing the rolling Yorkshire Dales from your bed or, if it’s early and you fancy pitching in, join the farmer’s rounds and meet the llamas, goats, cows, pigs and sheep that call the farm home

Farm Tours are an education experience for all ages and bring understanding that in order for there to be stone walls and stock in the fields the produce must be sold at a realistic price. Great for families where children can learn about sustainable farming life and touch and feed the caws, calves, goats, lambs, pigs, pony’s and rabbits. James Herriot would be in his element!

The Jonas Centre

The Jonas Centre, deep in Herriot Country’s Wensleydale at Redmire near Leyburn, is a haven for escapees from the fast pace of modern life and where families of all ages, groups and individuals can enjoy the tranquil beauty of the Yorkshire Dales.

First opened in 1996, the Jonas Centre is in a stunning location and provides accommodation in twelve Scandinavian styled self-catering log cabins that include a refrigerator, full sized electric cooker, toaster, kettle, microwave oven and ample crockery, cutlery and kitchen utensils. Storage heating plus small electric heaters keep you warm on cooler evenings and there’s a colour TV and wi-fi in each cabin plus wi-fi around the site. Bathrooms in standard and classic cabins include bath and shower and Premier cabins have shower only.

The Granary Barn provides a central meeting and dining area for up to 80 people and is ideally suited for group gatherings and as a focus for special interest groups, anniversary celebrations, family gatherings, reunion weekends, team-building breaks, walking weekends and business events. The main meeting area is an open plan multi-purpose meeting room, measuring 36ft x 18ft. In suitable weather conditions this can also provide access to a hard-standing reception area and enclosed lawn ideal for picnics and barbecues.

The Granary Barn has a fully equipped catering kitchen and on the upper floor there are two separate lounges, often used as additional meeting rooms in a more relaxed and informal environment. Each is equipped with TV & DVD and each lounge can accommodate around 15 people. Here you will also find reception and shop.

James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small might have been designed for The Jonas Centre as there have always been animals on the site and has been home to donkeys, alpacas and a turkey called Gerry! Currently there is Sally the Shetland Pony, (born in 1982); Billie the pygmy goat, (born in 2008); Martini & Cinzano the geese, Prudence the Kune Kune Pig, born in 2009, and various ducks and chickens. Educational sessions are held about the animals and there are opportunities to help the staff to feed the ducks and chickens their breakfast.
