Herriot Country is all about the outdoors where Alf Wight OBE (James Herriot) plied his trade as a local vet in rural North Yorkshire, like the farm at Burneston that is now Pheasant Hill Caravan and Motorhome Park.
Owned by the Barker family since Emma Barker bought land in 1876 and farmed from 1920 when present owner Richard’s Great Grandfather returned from France after the First World War, four generations have been farming the land and keeping cattle and sheep. Richard and Hannah are continuing that tradition, and now are welcoming guests to Pheasant Hill Caravan and Motorhome Park.
The farm is conveniently placed to the north of Burneston Village near Bedale, West of the A1(M) and easily reached towns of Masham, Northallerton, Ripon and Thirsk location of the World of James Herriot.
The 20-pitch park opened in May 2022 and is set in two acres surrounded by woodland and farmland and don’t be surprised if you see a few hedge-munching heifers or a few woolly heads popping through fences to say hello. The working farm also has a few bee-hives in the woods which adjoin the caravan park, and wildflower areas planted by the owner’s children. Homemade honey and free-range eggs are available to purchase during your stay.
Open 365 days a year, Pheasant Hill Caravan and Motorhome Park includes 20 pitches with electric hook-up, use of wet-room facilities, water supply, waste disposal and rubbish collection. The Park’s Low Season is 1st January to 30th June & 1st September to 31st December 2022 and High Season is 1st July to 31st August.
Nearby, there are some excellent local pubs, a choice of butchers, greengrocers, scrumptious locally-made chocolates and a market every Tuesday where you can collect a fresh catch from Carricks Fish Stall or delicious home-bakes from Bedale Bakery
Close to many attractions such as Aysgarth Falls on the River Ure, lots of local footpaths and bridleways accessible directly from the Park or explore routes of the Tour de Yorkshire. Nearby is the attractive Cathedral City of Ripon, excellent shopping in the County Town of Northallerton, Thirsk, home of James Herriot and the World of James Herriot or the beautiful countryside of the North York Moors or Yorkshire Dales.
