Old Manse Hotel Pickering

Pickering, the Gateway to the North York Moors, is home to the Old Manse Hotel where a warm welcome to Herriot Country awaits. This independent hotel with seven bedrooms is a home from home that Alf Wight OBE (James Herriot) would have been very comfortable.

A hearty Yorkshire breakfast is all part of the service at the Old Manse and dinner is available when booked in advance. The terrace overlooks the hotel’s tranquil gardens and is a pleasant spot for a nice cool summer evening drink.

There is ample space around the hotel that makes it ideal for small groups such a walkers, cyclists, classic car enthusiasts and shooting parties. Plus, birthday parties, celebrations, wedding parties or business meetings.  Children are most welcome as are pets (for a small charge), there is sky Sports TV in the lounge and there’s a secure car park with gated access.

The historic town of Pickering offers guests a fine base from which to explore Herriot Country with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in the town which travels through the North York Moors to Whitby via Goathland (home of the Heartbeat TV series) and Grosmont. The distinctive market town centre, Pickering Castle and the Beck Isle Museum are all a short walk from the Old Manse.

Further afield in Herriot Country, the attractive market town of Helmsley is a short drive away and nearby there is atmospheric Ampleforth Abbey, Sutton Bank which James Herriot described as ‘the finest view in England’ and Thirsk for the World of James Herriot the original home and surgery of Alf Wight OBE (James Herriot).
