James Herriot would often visit York and if he had seen the newly updated Elmbank Hotel it might have reminded him of the architecture and design of the Art Nouveau period that was so prolific in Glasgow where he grew up and went to veterinary school. Designed by Rennie Mackintosh contemporary, George Walton, this 19th century mansion is now part of Hilton Hotel’s Tapestry Collection and is a very welcome addition to Herriot Country Tourism’s partnership in York.
One of the most complete Art Nouveau collections in the UK, the hotel melds modern facilities with stunning stained glass, beautiful murals and detailed stencils that together provide style, comfort and interest. Locally-sourced ingredients focus on seasonal recipes with fresh flavours in every dish served in Leetham’s Brasserie which is one of York’s premium dining experiences where skilled chefs take pride in presenting dishes to celebrate innovation and tradition for an intimate dinner, special occasion or a casual lunch.
A perfect base from which to explore the City of York, the Elmbank is close to York’s Knavesmire Racecourse, a short walk to the city centre and with easy access via the A64 leading to all parts of North Yorkshire’s Herriot Country.
