Local crafts and creativity are popular in Herriot Country as people discover the skills and expertise that are the fabric of rural society. Spinning Jenny in Grassington is one such business that for over 50 years has been supplying fabric, wool and embroidery threads, accessories, full and part kits, books and patterns.
Started by Jenny Whitaker in Bradley near Skipton in 1960, then from 1996 run by Wendy Riley, Spinning Jenny has had several homes since its early beginnings including Kildwick, Flasby and Hellifield and now in Grassington where Jacquie Morley and Stephanie Haithwaite: friends who decided to take the plunge and buy the business together are now continuing the tradition.
The cosy, friendly shop in Grassington provides the perfect place to browse and select materials for your own craft project, you’ll find quality goods to the discerning embroiderer, which are supplied locally, nationally and internationally.
Look out for the new All Creatures TV series on Channel 5 where Spinning Jenny can be seen on Garrs Lane just behind the main square where filming happens. We are sure that James Herriot’s wife Helen would have been a regular at Spinning Jennys if it had been a business in fictional Darrowby.
