James Herriot’s stories included places like Solberge Hall Northallerton but he changed the names of people and places and in this case it became Allerton, a simple change, whereas his home of Thirsk became Darrowby. It’s quite possible that his character Mrs Pumphrey and her famously named Pekinese ‘Tricky Woo’ could have been modelled on Solberge Hall. With its quiet stately rural setting and classical design it could easily have been her home. It is a Georgian house of historical significance, was built in 1824 by John Hutton, a local landowner. It remained in the Hutton family for about one hundred years and was then purchased by Benjamin Talbot the inventor.

Solberge Hall is typical of the Yorkshire welcome that Alf Wight (James Herriot) experienced when he came to live in this beautiful part of North Yorkshire which kept him here for the rest of his life.
