Here are some of the best routes to discover the scenery that inspired the books and television adaptations of All Creatures Great and Small.
The Herriot Way
The Herriot Way is one of the most rewarding long-distance walks in the Yorkshire Dales. This circular route takes you through the landscapes that inspired vet and author James Herriot, visiting some of the most attractive parts of Wensleydale and Swaledale.
Starting from the village of Aysgarth, the route passes the spectacular Aysgarth Falls before following the River Ure towards the pretty village of Askrigg, famous as the filming location for Darrowby in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small. Walkers can also enjoy the waterfalls at Mill Gill and Whitfield Force before continuing to Hardraw, Hawes and the impressive climb over Great Shunner Fell.
The route covers around 50 miles and is usually completed over several days, offering a fantastic way to experience the quieter valleys, open fell tops and traditional villages of the Dales.
