Masham - The quintessential Dales town

Famous for family-run breweries, steam engines and an annual sheep fair, Masham’s streets are lined with traditional shops, cafes and pubs. Hidden treats and treasures can be found in its compact layout with everything only a few minutes walk away and it’s a perfect place to while away an afternoon. A thriving artistic community, Masham has a number of galleries and creative centres and every year is home to hundreds of swifts that spend their summer speeding around the pretty market place, which they use as their own airborne racecourse. A locally created sculpture trail around the town celebrates the swifts’ return each year and starts form the Masham Tourist Point.

Nearby Jervaulx Abbey makes the perfect place to stroll or enjoy some refreshment in the tearooms and café. It was once a grand and powerful monastery left ruined after Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, the remains of the building now tower over the landscape and set in well cared for and tranquil gardens.

Swinton Park near Masham is a luxury castle hotel set in 200 acres of parkland that has been a family home since the 1800’s and has played host to country house parties in legendary style and grandeur.
