Herriot Country Tourism Group is the collective of attractions, hotels, B&B’s, country cottages, restaurants, cafes, pubs, tour guides, craft centres and experiences that are based in Herriot Country.
The World of James Herriot in Thirsk is the focus for the group because Herriot Country is based on the stories created by Alf Wight OBE (James Herriot) of life in this beautiful area of North Yorkshire.
The World of James Herriot is in the original home and veterinary surgery where Alf Wight family lived and worked and made famous by his books that sold in their millions and became the TV series ‘All Creatures Great and Small”.
Herriot Country offers visitors so many attractions, some of the most beautiful scenery in the country including the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and many attractive and interesting market towns and the rural locations where James Herriot worked as a vet.
Herriot is only a short distance from the City of York, easy to reach via the A19 and A1(M) and is just over two hours by train from London, serviced by Grand Central Rail whose trains stop at Thirsk and Northallerton in the heart of Herriot Country.
